The Panini Press will not heat up

The grill is plugged into an outlet, yet is neither surface is heating up.

The outlet you are using may not be working

User

If the outlet the panini press is plugged into is not providing any power, the device will not be able to heat up. You can check to make sure the panini press is plugged into a working outlet by plugging a different device into the outlet such as a lamp. If the second device also does not work, it is likely the outlet is not providing power.

There may be a problem with panini press's plug wiring

Either due to normal wear and tear or dropping and jarring the device there could be a disconnection between the plug and the internal wiring. If there is any disconnection in the wiring, the device will not heat up because the heating elements will not receive power. Most likely, the plug wires came loose from the wire nuts that connect them to the internal wiring. Please refer to the plug wiring guide to access the wire nuts.

There may be problem with the wiring to the heating element

If after checking and replacing the wire nuts from the above step the device will still not heat up there could be a missing solder between the internal wiring and the heating element. If the top cooking surface heats up but the bottom does not, please refer to the bottom heating element solder replacement guide to replace the missing solder. If the top cooking surface does not heat up, please refer to the top heating element solder replacement guide. The iFixit Soldering Page can teach you basic soldering skills.

Upper cooking surface will not heat up

The bottom cooking surface will heat up but the top surface will not.

There may be a problem with the wiring to the upper heating element

If the bottom surface is heating up, but the top is not, the problem is a missing solder between the heating element and the power wires. Please refer to the top heating element solder replacement guide to replace the missing solder. The iFixit Soldering Page can teach you basic soldering skills.

Cooking surface will not close securely

The cooking surface will close but will not lock in place and comes open when the press is moved around.

There may be a problem with the locking knob

If the locking knob is cross threaded, too tight, or rusted shut, it will not open. Either the knob or the handle needs to be replaced. Please refer to the handle replacement guide to replace the handle and/locking knob.

There may be a problem with the closing latch

If the locking knob is working, but the panini press still won't close properly, then the problem is with the closing latch. This latch can be easily replaced by removing the 2 screws on the bottom of the latch and pulling outward on the latch.

Indicator lights will not light up

Both cooking surfaces heat up but one of the indicator lights will not light up.

For reference:

  • The red light comes on when the press is connected to power and heating up.
  • The green light comes on when the press is hot enough to cook.

There may be broken bulb

Hamilton Beach Panini Press 25450 Manual

To tell if you have a broken bulb, inspect the wiring leading from the upper heating element to the LEDs using the LED replacement guide. If the wiring is sound and there are no missing solders or connectors, the LED itself is broken and needs to be replaced. Once you have acquired a new LED of the correct color, please follow the LED replacement guide to replace the light. The iFixit soldering page can teach you basic soldering skills.

The green light will not light up

If the press is connected to power and both heating elements are at cooking heat, but the green light is not on, the thermal switch may need to be replaced. This is assuming the green LED itself is working. Follow the above steps to replace the LED if it is not working. Please follow the thermal switch replacement guide to replace the switch. The iFixit soldering page can teach you basic soldering skills.
