While the most common method of power for chain saws is gasoline, WEN Products makes and sells two models of chain saws that are powered by electricity. Free from harmful fuel emissions, these chain saws come in 14-inch and 16-inch models. If you've never used an electric chain saw before, there are several important tips you should know before you plug in and start cutting.
Chain Saw Setup
While the WEN chain saw is primarily pre-assembled when you take it out of the box, you'll have to attach the guide bar and chain to the machine before use. Ensure that the bar is securely attached and that the teeth on the chain face the direction of operation when the saw runs. Tighten the chain tension to the point where you can pull the chain forward manually with ease and ensure that the chain doesn't sag at all on the underside of the guide bar. Fill the chain oil reservoir with the appropriate oil. WEN recommends using SAE 30 in the summer and SAE 10 in the winter.
Powering the Saw
Because the electric chain saw requires connection to an electrical outlet to run, you'll need an appropriate extension cord to reach outdoor locations. Consult the chart located in the first few pages of the manual to determine the appropriate extension cord to use. To use the chart, you must know the length of the extension cord and the amps of the chain saw. You can then check for the American Wire Gauge rating to ensure that your extension cord is safe for use and rated for outdoor use.
Operating the Saw
Always wear appropriate clothing, heavy-duty gloves and eye protection when operating the saw. Starting an electric chain saw is an easier process than starting a gas-powered saw, but it still requires caution. Release the trigger lock on the chain saw and pull the trigger to power the saw. Always hold the chain saw with two hands and never raise it above shoulder height. When cutting wood, avoid allowing the tip of the saw to do the cutting. Doing so puts you at risk of kickback -- a dangerous situation where the blade of the chain saw rebounds off the wood and shoots back toward the user.

Maintenance Tips
Part of using an electric chain saw involves maintaining it properly so it works each time you need it. Before each use of the chain saw, check that the chain tension is correct, fill the chain lubrication reservoir if necessary and inspect the machine for loose or faulty parts, nuts and screws. Clean the machine and chain after every use. Sharpen the chain regularly. When the output of the saw is sawdust rather than wood chips, you know that it's time to have the chain sharpened or sharpen it yourself.
